This book Excellent Advice for Living is really different from all others that I read this year. It is basically a collection of some things that the author learned about life that he wished he had known earlier. The book has no structure, it is just a collection of snippets of knowledge.

Learnings from Excellent Advice for Living: Wisdom I Wish I’d Known Earlier

As the book does not tell one story but a lot of random things, in this post I am also going to do something different from the other posts from the Learning from Books series I am going to share the 5 advice that I liked the most.

“If you are not falling down occasionally, you are just coasting.”

“A vacation + a disaster = an adventure.”

*“Curiosity is fatal to certainty. The more curious you are, the less certain you’ll be.”

“Writing down one thing you are grateful for each day is the cheapest possible therapy ever.”

“Your behavior, not your opinions, will change the world.”

Other resources

This section is extra and here I compliment the post with content from other sources that resonate with the book.

  • Tim Ferriss Show Podcast Episode #669: Kevin Kelly — Excellent Advice for Living: Kevin Kelly helped launch and edit Wired magazine. He has written for The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, among many other publications.
  • The Knowledge Project with Shane Parrish Episode #166 Kevin Kelly: Excellent Advice for Living: When Kevin Kelly turned 68 years old, he began writing down notes and thoughts about all the lessons he’d learned in his life and the ones he wished he’d learned earlier. While those notes were originally intended for his young adult children, they eventually became the book Excellent Advice for Living: Wisdom I Wish I’d Known Earlier, which was released in May 2023.

These are my favorite pieces of advice from the book Excellent Advice for Living: Wisdom I Wish I’d Known Earlier written by Kevin Kelly. A special thanks to Vancouver Public Library (VPL) for allowing access to the book for free.

Happy reading!
