I’ve been listening to podcasts for a while now, basically since the time that we had to explain what a podcast was (I believe around 2016). Most of the podcasts that I listen to are educational in some way, I like podcasts that make me think, that I learn something, or help me improve any aspect of my life in any way.
Last year I switched to Spotify as a podcast player and with that, I got some nice stats at the end of the year about my listening, and based on the Spotify Wrapped I will share my top 5 listened to podcasts in the year 2023.
The top 5 podcasts that I listened to in 2023
I have spent 16,789 minutes with podcasts in 2023 which is 11.5 days. So, considering that Spotify counts the minutes listened and I listen in 2x, I listened to more than 33,000 minutes, it’s a crazy amount of podcast.
I will enumerate the top five podcasts, beginning with the least listened to and progressing towards the most popular.
5. Motley fool money
I was surprised to see this podcast in the list as I stopped listening, and following it a few months ago. The podcast is great, and it talks about the market and stocks and recent events related to investments but we converted our portfolio to ETFs.
I kind of wanted to stop listening about stocks in the market and current events so while the podcast is still great, it’s not good for me now because I’m I’m avoiding this kind of information right now.
4. Lex Fridman Podcast
I started listening to Lex Fridman when his podcast was called The Artificial Intelligence Podcast and continued listening and liked even more when he changed the name and the focus for a more generic interview-like podcast.
He is very smart and his questions are very good, together with the great guests, it becomes a very interesting and nice podcast. The variety of different guests is really good as well he talks about science, technology, history, philosophy, and the nature of intelligence, consciousness, love, and power. I learned so much from it.
Here are my favorite episodes:
- #326 – Annaka Harris: Free Will, Consciousness, and the Nature of Reality
- #384 – Matthew McConaughey: Freedom, Truth, Family, Hardship, and Love
- #395 – Walter Isaacson: Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, Einstein, Da Vinci & Ben Franklin
- #396 – James Sexton: Divorce Lawyer on Marriage, Relationships, Sex, Lies & Love
3. Huberman Lab
A science-focused podcast, Huberman Lab is great for learning about neuroscience and the relation between our brain, our behavior, and how we humans work at a science level, down to the signals and technical details.
The tools and knowledge that he shares are really nice and practical. I always to know a bit more about how this complex machinery of the human body works.
Here are my favorite episodes:
- Tim Ferriss: How to Learn Better & Create Your Best Future
- Guest Series | Dr. Paul Conti: Tools and Protocols for Mental Health
- Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett: How to Understand Emotions
- Mental Health Toolkit: Tools to Bolster Your Mood & Mental Health
- A Science-Supported Journaling Protocol to Improve Mental & Physical Health
2. The Knowledge Project with Shane Parrish
Another interview podcast with a bit more focus on business, performance, etc. Shane describes the podcast as “Master the best of what other people have already figured out so you can use their lessons in your life to create an unstoppable advantage.”
I love the wide range of topics and interviews with top people in their fields. It is a very good way to access the best of the best in the world.
It is currently number two as I started to re-listen old episodes that I missed or just forgot.
Here are my favorites:
- #160 TKP Insights: Leadership
- #159 Dr. Anna Lembke: Between Pleasure and Pain
- #149 Neil Pasricha: Simple Rules for Happiness
- #152 Tobi Lütke: Calm Progress
- #170: TKP Insights: Philosophy
- #140 TKP Insights: Sex and Relationships
- #178 Jerry Colonna: The CEO Whisperer
- #180 TKP Insights: Learning and Thinking
- #136 David Sinclair: Reversing the Aging Process
1. Hidden Brain
It is not a surprise for me that this is the most listened-to podcast. I love this podcast. The way Shankar Vedantam uses science and storytelling is unique. It helps me understand better the hidden behaviors and patterns that we follow without knowing. It is a very good source of self-improvement and learning about how we make our choices and how they affect our relationships.
My total listened minutes was 2,231 making me the top 2% fan of Hidden Brain in Spotify. A bit is because I am also going back to old episodes to refresh or just listening to the ones that I missed.
